Common Furnace Issue: Why Does My Furnace Turn Off and On?

The most common reason furnaces “short cycle,” or turn on and off frequently, is due to a dirty air filter. Dirty furnace air filters can restrict and clog air from reaching your heat exchanger, which causes your furnace to overheat and shut down. 

The culprit could also be a faulty or improperly placed thermostat. It may be that your thermostat is placed near a heat source like sunlight, a heat register, or fireplace. This causes the thermostat to think your home is warmer than it is, triggering the furnace to turn off early and often.

Another possible cause of short cycling is that your furnace hasn’t been sized correctly for your home. A furnace that is too large for your home heats the area too quickly and shuts off. Then, once your home cools off the cycle repeats.

Understanding Continuous Furnace Operation: Why Does My Furnace Keep Running?

More often than not, furnaces run constantly because the thermostat fan setting is turned to “on.” To correct this, change the setting to “auto” and turn the thermostat to a temperature that’s lower than the current room temperature. You should start to hear the furnace cycling after a few minutes.

Resolving Cold Air Problems: Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

You should first investigate  your furnace’s fan setting. If your fan is set to “on” it means  your furnace blower is running even when the furnace isn’t producing warm air. Change the fan setting to “auto.” This ensures that the blower only runs when the furnace is actively heating the air.

Another common cause could be a dirty air filter which we mentioned in the question above. Dirty air filters restrict airflow to the furnace’s heat exchanger, causing your furnace to shut down and cold air to build up. Replace your air filter and you should start to feel warm air again..
