Air Handler Replacement & Installation in Connecticut

What Is An Air Handler?

An air handler delivers controlled climate air throughout your home. They are designed to regulate the temperature of the air before blowing it through your air ducts. The handler contains a heat exchanger to warm or cool the air, sometimes a filter to clean the air of impurities, and a fan that blows the air through your ducts. Air handlers are generally found in an attic or basement and they are connected to your outside condenser/heat pump and/or to your boiler.

Why is an Air Handler Important?

Temperature Control: Air handlers plays a key role in regulating the temperature of the air that is circulated through the HVAC system. It can adjust the amount of hot or cold air that is supplied to different parts of the home, helping to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the space.

Air quality: The air handler can help to improve the air quality in a building by removing dust, pollen, and other allergens from the air. It can also help to remove stale air and replace it with fresh, filtered air, improving the overall indoor air quality.

What Causes Them to Malfunction?

  • Airflow Obstructions: A clogged or dirty handler can restrict airflow through the air handler, leading to reduced efficiency and poor performance.
  • Motor failure: The motor that powers the blower fan in the air handler can wear out over time and eventually fail. This can cause the air handler to stop working altogether, or to operate less efficiently.
  • Dirty Evaporator Coils: When the evaporator coils in your system are dirty, they can cause serious problems for your entire cooling system. Dirty coils lead to freezing, which can damage your compressor.
  • Electrical problems: The blower assembly contains a lot of electrical wiring, and over time, they can become frayed or corroded.
  • Drainage issues: If the condensate drain line becomes clogged or blocked, water can back up into the handler, potentially causing damage to the components.

How Do I Know if my Air Handler is Broken and How Will it Affect My System?

  • Reduced airflow: If you notice that the airflow from your HVAC system is weak, or if certain rooms in your home are not receiving adequate heating or cooling, this could be a sign of a malfunctioning handler.
  • Strange noises: If you hear unusual noises coming from your HVAC system, such as rattling, banging, or grinding, this could indicate a problem with the air handler.
  • Water leaks: If you notice water pooling around your HVAC system or near the handler, this could be a sign of a clogged or blocked condensate drain line.
  • Higher energy bills: If you notice a sudden increase in your energy bills, this could be a sign that the handler is not operating efficiently, and is consuming more energy than necessary.
