Many factors go into determining what size propane tank is right for your home. Keep in mind propane tanks are only filled to about 80% capacity to allow room for expansion. Here are some of the questions to consider when picking the best tank for your needs:
What are you planning to use propane for?
Propane can power small appliances such as barbecue grills, stoves, and clothes dryers. It can also power large appliances such as generators, pool heaters, and fireplaces as well as heat entire homes. Different propane uses require different size propane tanks to give you the appropriate storage for your needs.
Where do you want your propane tank located?
Whether you’re looking to purchase or lease a new propane tank, you have the option of putting the tank above ground or underground. Smaller to midsize tanks are usually above ground. And while most people like to bury the larger tanks, there are benefits to keeping them above ground:
Accessibility:
Above ground propane tanks are easier to fill, to notice wear and tear, and to check the amount of propane left in the tank. Technicians have an easier time making repairs since no digging is required.
Less Expensive:
The installation and general upkeep of above ground propane tanks is less expensive than underground propane tanks. The installation does not require backhoes to dig a large hole or anode bags to be placed, and are usually located closer to the house/heat source.
Easier to Add-on and to Place:
Small and medium-sized above ground tanks can be placed closer to your home or hidden out of sight in bushes. Placing tanks closer to your home means less propane line used. And adding new tanks to your property that tie together with existing tanks, should your fuel needs change, is easier.
What size propane tank is right for the size of your home?
The number of appliances you are planning to fuel will indicate what size tank you need. Larger households and bigger appliances that run off propane need bigger tanks and sometimes more than one!
Below is information on the different size tanks available, along with their capacity and most common uses.
1000 Gallon Propane Tank
Dimensions: 16′ 2″ long and 41″ in diameter
Common Uses: Home heating for larger square footage homes or homes with all appliances running on propane.
Capacity: When full, this tank holds 800 gallons.
500 Gallon Propane Tank
Dimensions: 9′ 11″ long and 37.5″ in diameter
Common Uses: Primarily used for home heating or homes with 2-3 propane appliances such as supplemental or space heaters, hot water heaters, and generators.
Capacity: When full, this propane tank holds 400 gallons of propane.
320 Gallon Propane Tank
Dimensions: 10 feet long and 30” in diameter
Common Uses: Residential hot water, generators, pool heaters, heating for smaller homes
Capacity: Holds about 256 gallons of propane when full
250 Gallon Propane Tank
Dimensions: 7’10” long and 30″ in diameter
Common Uses: Supplemental heating or 2 home appliances including water heaters, generators, and pool heaters.
Capacity: When full, a 250-gallon propane tank holds 200 gallons of propane.
120 Gallon Propane Tank (Commonly referred to as a 420 lb. tank)
Dimensions: 4’6″ in height and 30″ in diameter
Common Uses: Home heating, hot water, cooking appliance, dryers, fireplaces, generators, pool heaters, garage heat, temporary heating solutions
Capacity: A 120-gallon propane tank holds 96 gallons of propane when full.
60 Gallon Propane Tank
Dimensions: 43” tall and 24” in diameter
Common Uses: Residential cooking appliances and clothes drying
Capacity: Holds about 48 gallons of propane when full
The smallest type of propane tank, the 20-lb, does not require installation, but it is undoubtedly the most familiar and the one used most often.
20 lb. Propane Tank (Commonly referred to as a barbeque tank)
Dimensions: 18” tall and 12” in diameter
