What is a Hot Water Heater?

A hot water heater is a plumbing fixture that does exactly what its name implies; it heats water. This hot water is used for showers, baths, doing laundry, washing dishes, cleaning, cooking, and much more.  

How Does a Hot Water Heater Work?

There are two types of water heaters: tanked heaters and tankless water heaters.

For a tanked water heater, a dip tube feeds cold water from your home's water lines to the bottom of the tank's interior, where the water starts to warm up. As the water heats, it rises to the top of the tank. Once the water has reached the temperature set on the unit’s thermostat - usually 120 degrees Fahrenheit - the heating mechanism turns off and the water is stored within the tank. When you turn on your sink, washing machine or shower, the water heater will "send" hot water through your pipes. As the heater sends out warmed water, new cold water is put into it, which moves the warmed water into the pipes and to your faucet through pressure. The heat-out pipe is located near the top of the tank. Water exiting the water heater at the top is always the hottest in the tank at any given moment because it's the nature of hot water to rise above denser, cold water.

A tankless water heater heats the water instantly instead of storing it in a tank. As you turn on the water and set the desired temperature, a tankless water heater will heat the water going into your shower or sink for as long as you have the water running.

How Long Do Hot Water Heaters Last?

Conventional tank water heaters usually last for 8-12 years on average. However, when used and maintained appropriately, they can last for 15+ years. And tankless water heaters can last as long as 20 years. 

Signs Your Hot Water Heater Needs Replacement

• If your water heater is leaking, it must be replaced immediately. Leaks are usually the result of pressure buildup inside the tank. This happens when the water pressure or temperature is too high, or when the unit’s relief valve is not working properly. Neglecting a leak can lead to a tank explosion. Signs of leaks include moisture or puddles around the water heater’s base and water corrosion on the side of your tank. 
• Loud noises coming from the tank can be an indication of sediment buildup. As sediment hardens, it can move around the tank and cause knocking, rumbling and gurgling sounds.  
• Water discoloration is a clear sign your hot water heater needs attention. Rust-colored water or water with a metallic odor can mean that the anode rod needs to be replaced or the tank itself is beginning to rust. 
• Cloudy water may indicate you have a sediment buildup in your water heater.
• If you only get cold water from your hot water faucets, it could be a sign that a heating element is broken in the unit.

FAQs About Hot Water Heaters

Which is better: a regular water heater or a tankless water heater?

Both types of water heaters are good. However, the market is moving more towards tankless water heaters due to their small size, energy savings, and long lifespan. While regular water heaters have a lifespan of about ten years, tankless versions can last more than 20. But, be aware that tankless systems can cost more to purchase compared to a standard water heater setup.

What temperature should my hot water heater be set at?

120 degrees Fahrenheit is the safety recommendation against scalding, but 140 degrees is the common default setting. 

How often should I flush my water heater?

It is recommended that you flush your water heater at least once per year. Doing so will help to prevent the potential problems that sediment can bring over time.
