If you haven’t noticed, this month has been the warmest January on record in quite some time here in Connecticut. Winter usually brings us a cold and icy climate, but lately we have welcomed warmer days and put up with additional rain. So, what’s been the cause?
Local meteorologists and weather experts frequently consider the El Niño Southern Oscillation to be the cause of unusual Connecticut winter weather. However, the oscillation often creates colder and snowier conditions. Instead, experts are pointing to a La Niña winter for the warmer Connecticut weather.
What is a La Niña Winter?
A La Niña season is typically a wave-like pacific jet stream that passes through the southeastern/eastern seaboard to create drier, warmer conditions that are relatively abnormal for a Connecticut winter. When a La Niña winter occurs in Connecticut, temperatures are the chilly temps you’re accustomed to throughout December, followed by a warmer than usual January.
What makes a La Niña winter so peculiar is that it’s hard to predict! There are only two reliable records of La Niña winters (from 1975-76 and 2000-01), making it difficult for experts to recognize a pattern. However, this winter is the third La Niña in a row, making it even more challenging to understand its frequency.
Do We Have Cold Weather to Come?
The short answer is: YES – While La Niña helps provide warmer temperatures throughout the coldest point of Connecticut winters, snowfall and chill should still be expected by February as temperatures are expected to return to normal.
What Should I Prepare For in the Meantime?
Connecticut winters are unpredictable, so stay prepared! Ensure that your fuel source, whether it be propane or oil, is adequately filled in case of dropping temperatures.
