How to Cool Your Home Without Cranking the Air Conditioning This Summer

It is not uncommon for summer to bring temperatures upwards of 100 degrees here in Connecticut. It is important to stay mindful of how much weather can dictate our lives and daily actions. Extreme heat creates discomfort in us all, not to mention it can affect our overall productivity and cause us to become fatigued or irritable.

So how do you stay cool? A simple answer would be to blast the air conditioning and create a nice wintery environment at home. By the end of the month, however, you will notice that your electricity bill might not be the best solution for your wallet. Here are some other approaches to tackling the summer heat and staying cool without blasting the air conditioning:

Crack open a few windows at night:

When the sun goes down it gets substantially cooler, so opening some windows can help create a nice breeze. You will be amazed at how quickly the heat throughout your house will be replaced with cool, refreshing air.

Close the blinds during the day:

Windows allow sunlight and heat to enter your home with no way to escape, so slow down this effect by keeping your blinds closed during the day. If this makes your home feel too much like a dark cave, focus on just closing the blinds on your west and south facing windows. In some homes, this can lower the mid-day temperature of your home by as much as 10-15 degrees.

Avoid using the oven and other kitchen appliances:

Making dinner in the oven or on a stovetop is going to add heat to your home. Instead of cooking inside when it is already hot, enjoy some fresh air and use an outdoor grill for cooking.

Utilize the fan on your furnace/air handler:

Most thermostats allow you to manually turn on the fan that usually blows the cold or hot air throughout your home. That same fan can be run on its own and used to evenly distribute the cooler air from the basement or main level to other parts of your home.

Maximize your air conditioning efficiency:

If you have central air conditioning, the more efficient the system runs, the better it will cool your house and the less it will cost you. Installing a programmable thermostat can help. Learn more about The Nest Learning Thermostat.

Change your air conditioning filters regularly:

A dirty air filter not only reduces the air quality but also the efficiency of airflow. In order to avoid this, especially in the months of the heaviest use, remember to change your air filters every 30-60 days.

Keep interior doors open:

Allowing air to flow through your house freely will keep your home cooler. Combined with open windows, a summer breeze can blow into your house and circulate throughout your home, replacing the hot air. If interior doors are closed, air will remain stagnant and not be replaced.
