Tip #2 – Install a Programmable Thermostat

Installing an automatic setback or programmable thermostat means you don’t have to worry about remembering to turn down the heat before leaving the house or going to bed. They also ensure that the house will be at a comfortable temperature in the morning or when you return home in the evening. You can program the thermostat to automatically drop the temperature down to the mid-60s when you’re asleep and into the low-60s when you’re at work or away on vacation; any lower and the pipes could freeze. If it’s going to be truly frigid while you’re gone, you’ll want to keep it a little warmer. By having the programmable thermostat lower the temperature 7-10°F while you’re out, you can save up to 10 percent on the heating bill. For more information on programmable thermostats, see Home Thermostats – Is it time to replace or upgrade.
