Your heating and cooling systems require regular maintenance to keep them running properly. A few monthly maintenance tasks can go a long way to improve your HVAC system’s efficiency and performance. Here are some tips of what you should inspect, clean, schedule, and set for the month of December:

1. Insulation

Check your attic insulation to make sure it hasn’t deteriorated or flattened, which will reduce its efficiency. Look across your attic, and see if the insulation is level with the attic floor joists, or if it’s packed below, which indicates you need more.

2. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly throughout heating season. Test batteries each month, using the unit’s TEST button. Vacuum away any dust which has accumulated on the detectors.

3. Oil Tank Vent and Fill

Trim back bushes and obstructions in the areas near the oil tank vent and fill. In the event of a snow storm shoveling a path for the delivery driver decreases the likelihood of a safety incident.

4. Air Filters

It is recommended that homeowners change their air filters every thirty to ninety days. If you have disposable filters, remove the old ones and insert a clean replacement. If you have filters that are reusable, wash it according to the manufacturer’s directions and allow it to dry entirely before reinserting it into the filter compartment. Unwanted dirt and dust can clog up your system causing performance issues. You may find it necessary to replace air filters sooner than the usual 3-month mark during times of high use, in which case it’s important to keep a few back up filters handy just in case. If you are having to change air filters too often, check out our blog post: 3 Reasons Your Air Filters Get Dirty So Quickly.

5. Heating Annual Tune-Up

To properly maintain heating equipment, most manufacturers recommend it be serviced and cleaned at least once a year. Most service contracts cover the cost of a tune up to help your system run efficiently through the heating season. Preventative maintenance of your equipment reduces the likelihood of requiring an emergency service call at 2:00 o’clock in the morning on the coldest night of the year.
