HVAC Maintenance Tips for Pet Owners

When You Partner With a Family-Run Company Like Levco, You Are Treated like Family.

There’s no question that pets are family. Where else can we get unconditional love, laughter, and comfort in one adorable package? And let’s face it, there are days we like our pets better than our human family members. Having furry babies means having pet hair and dander all over your home. The vacuum cleaner becomes permanently attached to your hand, you carry lint rollers in your purse or briefcase, and pet hair is a constant fashion accessory to every outfit. But having pets also means taking extra steps on HVAC maintenance to help your home’s equipment run efficiently.

Groom Pets Regularly

Grooming your pets regularly reduces the amount of shedding, which is great news for cutting your cleaning time and for your air filters. Not only does pet hair rapidly cover your filters’ surfaces, but they can also clog your air ducts. You can lessen the problem by brushing your pet (outside if possible) several times a week or better yet, by taking them to a groomer.

Change Air Filters Often

Unfortunately, in addition to the massive amounts of hair that dogs and cats shed all over your home, you also have to worry about pet dander. These tiny particles of dead skin become airborne once they come off your pets and will get caught in your air filters. With time, the filters become caked with dust, pet hair, and pet dander. Dirty or clogged filters block airflow and thus reduce the efficiency of the system. That means higher energy bills!

Pet owners need to make it a priority to change air filters regularly. The more pets you have, the more often you have to change them. Doing so will also help if there are family members who suffer from allergies living in the home.

Upgrade your HVAC filter

If you’re worried you won’t remember to change the filters, or that you won’t be able to fit it into your already hectic schedule, consider upgrading to a higher quality filter. Choose an HVAC filter with a high MERV rating for a more efficient function. A MERV rating of 8 and higher is usually the filter that’s best for homes with pets. These types of filters clean more allergens, pollutants, and contaminants from the air.

Check out our guide to air filters – MERV ratings.

Clear the Air Vents

Both hair and dander can easily clog air vents too. When you’re vacuuming your home, use the hose to suck up the hair and dust on and around your air vents.

Clean the Air Ducts

Even if you groom your pets regularly, some of their hair is still going to end up in your home’s air ducts. Clogged air ducts can result in a breeding ground for viruses and bacteria.

If you decide to clean them yourself, remember to turn off the HVAC unit first to prevent hazards and from breathing dirty air.  Consider having a professional perform this service for you, not only to ensure it’s done right but so that you don’t have to crawl around in tight spaces.

Use an Air Purifier

Using an air purifier eases some of the burden placed on your air filters. Experts say that a HEPA purifier ensures that up to 99.97% of pet dander is removed from the air before it reaches your air filters. Air purifiers also reduce other types of airborne allergens.

Call an HVAC Professional for Regular Maintenance

In the end, there’s only so much you can do to keep your vents, ducts, and filters in good condition. It’s important to have a Levco professional perform regular HVAC maintenance on your system. Doing so prevents down-time and keeps you, your pets and your HVAC system purring happily.
